CFB ISD Recognizes
25th Anniversary of
Reach for the Stars
At its November 6, 2014, Board of Trustees meeting, Superintendent Bobby Burns and CFB ISD trustees will honor the 25 years of cooperation between the Farmers Branch Carrollton branch of AAUW, the ISD and Brookhaven College at a ceremony beginning at 7 p.m.at the ISD Administration Building, 1445 N. Perry Road, Carrollton. The annual career conference called Reach for the Stars that encourages 7th and 8th grade middle school girls to pursue interests in math and science owes its success, in large part, to the efforts of employees at each location. AAUW members recruit and schedule women presenters employed in science careers, procure corporate sponsors, purchase meals and materials, and organize the events of the day. Brookhaven College provides printing, facilities and security. The counselors at the middle schools assist the girls in registering for RFTS, schedule buses for transportation to the college, and attend the event with the young ladies.
Each year approximately 225 girls attend the 5 hour event. They experience hands on learning activities and learn from women in a variety of fields from veterinarian to Emergency Medical Technicians, from computer scientists to chemists.
Data between the years 2001 and 2008 reveal that approximately 54.5% of the young women who have attended RFTS also later enrolled at Brookhaven College for credit and 39.2% enrolled in at least one STEM related course. Learn more in our Reach for the Stars summary.
